How to Maintain & Protect Greased Systems in Winter

Most greases will withstand temperatures slightly below 0°C, and some can tolerate temperatures below -10°C. But if the temperature drops into the critical zone, the lubricant will begin to stiffen or become extremely viscous and the application will not be lubricated properly. Some equipment may seize up under these conditions. Depending on the chemical composition, a lubricant can start to display properties similar to a solid—with catastrophic results for equipment!

Fortunately, here in the UK we don't experience the sort of temperatures that will affect the properties of grease too drastically. However, central lubrication and autolube systems can struggle to move grease in very cold temperatures so here is a top tip to consider to maintain and protect your greased systems through the winter months.

Manually greasing all grease points on a machine would be a challenge to even the most experienced maintenance technicians because, as we all know, grease lubrication points tend to be in areas that are hard to access!

Battery powered grease guns come in useful through the winter when moving stiff grease. However, you must be careful not to over-pressurise the grease as it can blow out a fitting and damage the gun.

We stock a number of high-powered professional grease guns for all types of Plant & Machinery, including the M18 Milwaukee model which can be found on our website here:
