High Quality Batteries - Are They Worth It?

The battery is a part of your machine that you just need to have working reliably at all times. You don’t want to have to regularly check that it is functioning correctly, or have the stress of worrying whether your equipment will even start in the morning, especially in this cold winter weather we’ve had recently!

That is why it is imperative to purchase high quality batteries, to relieve you of any further stress and ultimately save you unnecessary costs down the line.

It may not be surprising that there are many batteries in aftermarket sales that are not of the quality that could give you confidence in the everyday functioning of your machine.

The way these lead-acid batteries function is through a simple chemical process to generate a current. A combination of liquid sulfuric acid and lead dioxide coated plates produce lead sulphate and free electrons, ultimately generating a current through the battery. This current then in turn, converts the lead sulphate back into lead dioxide.

These batteries can therefore seem simple and inexpensive to make… However ensuring you have one of a high quality is essential.

Often, deep discharge can formulate within the battery, causing the lead plates to be coated in a layer of sulphate, ultimately inhibiting the chemical process from occurring. This will reduce the battery’s ability to produce a current and therefore often conclude in a ‘dead’ battery. The sales of refurbished batteries are also common in automotive and plant markets, however these are all the more likely to experience the above issues, and are not generally a sensible choice if you need a long lasting and reliable source of power.

One way to reduce any concern that you may be purchasing a low quality or refurbished battery, is to look for batteries with a warranty. This will give you confidence that for a period after purchase, your battery will be covered should there be any issues.

However the warranty alone will not solve all your problems when your machine does not start up on the first day on a job. Ensuring that your battery is of the highest quality, meeting all regulations and is new, not refurbished, will be the most effective way to run your machine reliably, whilst also reducing long term costs as the lifespan of the battery is likely to be far greater.
