Why Are EP2 Greases Different Colours? Do I Need Brown, Red or Blue?
By Travis Knappett, Kompo® Oil & Grease Specialist at HTS Spares.
Grease manufacturers add colourants to their products primarily to help users identify which grease they're using and avoid mixing incompatible types. Mixing different grease types can cause the lubricant to break down and fail - sometimes with costly consequences for your machinery.
At HTS Spares, we stock three EP2 greases in brown, red and blue. Each has a specific formulation suited to different applications and operating conditions. Here's what sets them apart.
🟫 Brown EP2 Grease - Multipurpose Lithium (K42EP)
Brown EP2 grease is our entry-level, everyday workhorse. It's a multipurpose lithium grease prepared from highly refined mineral oil, with the addition of sulphur phosphorus extreme pressure additives.
What makes it good?
- Strong mechanical stability - it holds its consistency even after extended or heavy use
- Resistant to water washing, so it stays in place even if components get wet
- Protects against rust and is non-corrosive to non-ferrous metals and steel
- Suitable for temperatures up to 120°C in continuous service, with short-term tolerance up to 150°C
- Compatible with most standard grease gun cartridge systems
What's it best for?
Brown EP2 grease is ideal for general-purpose industrial applications including:
- Machine tools and bearings
- Excavator pins and bushes
- Track packing on plant machinery
- Automotive wheel bearings and chassis points
If you're looking for a cost-effective, reliable all-rounder for everyday plant machinery maintenance, brown is your go-to.

🔴 Red EP2 Grease - Longlife Lithium Complex (K2EP)
Red EP2 grease is a step up from the brown. It's a lithium complex soap thickened grease made from mineral oil, loaded with performance additives that provide extreme pressure (EP) protection, anti-oxidation, and rust and corrosion resistance.
The key difference between a standard lithium grease and a lithium complex grease is the thickener. The complex formulation allows the grease to perform at higher temperatures than conventional lithium greases, and gives it superior sealing properties.
What makes it stand out?
- Outperforms conventional lithium grease at elevated temperatures
- Excellent sealing properties that protect bearings from corrosive atmospheres
- Resists the ingress of water, dust and abrasive particles
- High degree of water tolerance, making it a great choice where there's a risk of water contamination, such as boat trailer bearings or machining centres using water-mix coolants
- Provides lubrication even under severe operating conditions
What's it best for?
Red EP2 grease excels in:
- Wheel and other bearings on cars, vans, trucks, buses and coaches
- Construction plant: bulldozers, scrapers, loading shovels and dump trucks
- Industrial equipment operating at high temperatures
- Boat trailer bearings (combined immersion + high-speed road use)
- Machining centres using water-mix coolants

🔵 Blue EP2 Grease - Premium Lithium/Calcium Complex (K323)
Blue EP2 grease is our highest specification grease and is designed for the most demanding applications. It uses an advanced lithium/calcium base enhanced with modern polymer technology – a formulation that goes well beyond what standard lithium greases can offer.
This is the grease you reach for when operating conditions are severe, environments are hostile, or machinery simply cannot afford to fail.
What makes it exceptional?
- High water tolerance - performs in fresh and saltwater environments where other greases wash away
- Superior adhesion - sticks to surfaces even where rubbing action would strip an ordinary grease coating
- Exceptional mechanical stability - maintains its consistency under continuous heavy loading and shock loads
- Wide operating temperature range - suitable for both very low and high temperature extremes
- Incorporates polymer technology for a thicker, more protective film
What's it best for?
Blue EP2 grease is the choice for:
- Agricultural machinery
- Off-highway and construction equipment in harsh environments
- Commercial vehicles and heavy transport
- Marine applications (fresh and saltwater)
- Heritage and steam engines
- Horticulture equipment
- Any application where rubbing surfaces tend to strip ordinary grease

Which Grease Should I Choose?
Not sure where to start? You can refer to my recent guide on how to choose the right EP2 grease here. Or here's a 'quick decision' guide:
Choose Brown EP2 if: You need a reliable, cost-effective grease for everyday use on excavators, general plant machinery or machine tools. It's perfect for contractors who need to grease pins, bushes and bearings regularly without breaking the bank.
Choose Red EP2 if: You're working with machinery that runs hot, operates in wet conditions, or requires longer service intervals between re-greasing. It's a great upgrade from standard brown for construction plant, HGVs and boat trailer bearings.
Choose Blue EP2 if: You're dealing with extreme conditions - saltwater environments, heavy shock loads, demanding agricultural or marine applications - or where machinery downtime simply isn't an option. Blue is the premium solution where only the best will do.

Can I Mix Different Coloured Greases?
This is a very common question - and the answer is generally no, you should avoid it.
Different grease formulations use different thickener systems (e.g. lithium vs lithium complex vs lithium/calcium complex). Mixing incompatible greases can cause the lubricant to soften, separate or even break down completely - leaving your components without adequate protection. The colour coding exists specifically to help you avoid this mistake.
If you're switching from one grease type to another, it's good practice to purge as much of the old grease as possible before applying the new product.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does EP2 grease stand for?
EP stands for Extreme Pressure, and 2 refers to the NLGI consistency grade. EP2 grease is formulated to withstand high loads and resist metal-to-metal contact.
What colour is standard EP2 grease?
EP2 grease comes in several colours including brown, red and blue. The colour indicates the grease formulation and performance level - it is not just cosmetic.
Can I use red EP2 grease instead of brown?
Yes - red EP2 is a higher specification product and can be used in most applications where brown would be used. It offers better high-temperature performance and water resistance. However, avoid mixing the two greases in the same fitting.
Is blue EP2 grease better than red?
Blue EP2 is our highest specification grease and is designed for more demanding applications, particularly where water resistance, shock loading or extreme environments are a concern. For most general applications, red or even brown EP2 will be perfectly adequate.
What EP2 grease is best for excavators?
Brown EP2 (K42EP) is specifically recommended for excavator pins, bushes and track packing. For excavators operating in very wet or marine environments, red or blue EP2 would offer added protection.
How do I know if I'm using the wrong grease?
The colour coding system helps you identify grease types at a glance. If you're unsure what grease is currently in a fitting, or if you've inherited machinery with an unknown grease history, consult your machine manufacturer's manual or feel free to contact me at travis.knappett@htsspares.com, or call me on the HTS Spares number - 01432 373350.
