World Environment Day 2026: How HTS Spares Is Taking Sustainability Beyond Net Zero

By Roy Knappett, Managing Director at HTS Spares

Every year on 5th June, World Environment Day brings businesses, governments and communities together to reflect on the state of our planet. This year's theme, set by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), focuses on climate change and the urgent signals the Earth is sending us.

At HTS Spares, we see World Environment Day not as a moment for hollow promises, but as a chance to be honest about our sustainability journey - what we've achieved, and where we still have work to do.

Sustainability at HTS Spares - A Bigger Picture

When most people hear 'sustainability', they think carbon footprints and net-zero targets. Those things matter, but our vision goes further. Sustainability at HTS Spares means building a collaborative environmental, social, and economic strategy - one that involves our customers, our team, and our supply chain in equal measure.

This summer, the world's eyes will be on the football pitch - but the real game being played is the race to reduce our environmental impact, and the clock is ticking.

Our approach is built around three core pillars:

PillarWhat It Means in Practice
Environmental StewardshipISO 14001:2015 certified. Reducing waste, emissions and energy use while protecting natural resources.
Ethical ProcurementPrioritising local UK sourcing and responsible supply chains to cut our carbon footprint and support UK manufacturing.
Social ResponsibilityCreating local jobs, partnering with schools and charities, and engaging employees in sustainability initiatives.

Why This Matters - The Industry Context

The scale of the challenge is hard to ignore. The British construction industry generates 50,000 tonnes of plastic packaging waste per year - that's four times the weight of The Brooklyn Bridge. Only 2-4% of single-use packaging leaving construction sites is recycled, with the rest diverted to landfill, fly-tipped, or burnt (London Build Expo).

As a supplier of construction plant machinery parts, HTS Spares sits right in the middle of this challenge - and that's why packaging reduction is one of our most visible commitments.

What We've Done: Key Milestones

Packaging - Reduction Initiatives

In 2025, we set a target to reduce plastic use by 250,000 metres - and we met it. Here's how:

  • Paper over plastic - We replaced plastic void fill with shredded paper, eliminating a significant volume of single-use plastic from daily operations.
  • Reuse of supplier packaging - All suitable incoming packaging is reused when dispatching to customers, extending material lifecycles and cutting waste.
  • Eco-friendly materials - We swapped vinyl tape for paper tape and use an eco-pallet wrapper with a minimum of 30% recycled content.
ISO 14001:2015 - Our Environmental Management Standard

We hold ISO 14001:2015 certification, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. According to the British Business Bank, ISO 14001 can help businesses meet statutory and regulatory requirements, reduce waste and boost efficiencies to improve overall financial performance, and embed environmental thinking into business planning.

For our customers, this certification is a signal that our environmental commitments are independently verified. you can view our full certifications and corporate social responsibility commitments on our website.

EcoVadis - A Sustainability Rating

We've also begun our journey towards a formal sustainability rating with EcoVadis, one of the world's most trusted business sustainability platforms. This will give our customers and supply chain partners further independent evidence of our credentials.

Our Goals - What We're Working Towards

Environmental: Maintain ISO 14001:2015 certification, cut emissions across transport and facilities, minimise warehouse energy usage, and promote circularity through reusable systems and end-of-life recycling.

Procurement and Supply Chain: Increase UK-sourced products to reduce overseas shipping, improve supply chain transparency, reduce reliance on long-haul imports from Asia, and innovate with sustainable alternatives where possible. Find out more about the products we stock on our website.

Social and Community: Support local employment, partner with schools and charities, offer employees a paid volunteering benefit, and run annual charitable campaigns locally and across the UK. We genuinely value the communities around us - and that means going well beyond compliance.

Our Pledge

Our pledge is simple: to ensure our business is as economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable as possible - and to be honest when we still have progress to make.

This year's World Environment Day theme highlights the signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back. For HTS Spares, that signal is clear - sustainability is a long-term commitment, built action by action across every part of our business.
